Introduction and History

Thomassen is a leading manufacturer of reciprocating compressors. Established in 1906, the organization has supplied high-quality compression solutions to major refineries and leading petrochemical companies for over a century.

Our in-depth knowledge of field processes and compressor-related systems allows us to design, construct, manufacture, repair, revamp, overhaul and service all types of reciprocating compressors, including auxiliary equipment. We also service and revamp centrifugal compressors and steam turbines, and supply compressor monitoring systems.

API and ISO standards
The technical specifications of our compressors - which comply with and often exceed API and ISO standards - meet the toughest requirements. What's more, our focus on fundamental research has resulted in several highly innovative technologies that save time and money. To assist clients, we additionally offer customized training courses that are well known for their high standards and attention to detail.

Quality assurance
As you might expect, our quality management system complies with NEN-EN-ISO 9001:2000 standards. The QA system has been operational since 1987, and is periodically checked and certified by Lloyd's Register Quality Assurance. All installation, commissioning, repair and servicing activities are nowadays also certified by Lloyds, and comply with the Safety Checklist Contractors (VCA).


History

1893	Founder Geert Thomassen obtains the dealership for National Gas Engines.
1896	Geert Thomassen designs and builds his own gas engine, rated at 0.5 HP.
1906	N.V. Motoren- en Machinefabriek v/h Thomassen & Co is founded in Rheden, the Netherlands.
1916	Shell awards a contract for eleven gas engines to be delivered to Indonesia.
1921	The first reciprocating compressor leaves the drawing board.
1924	Shell acquires a majority stake in the company (which it sells in 1956).
1960	The manufacture of reciprocating compressors is licensed to Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co. in Japan.
1996	Thomassen Compression Systems is established as a separate division
1999	….. and a separate company
2011	Thomassen Compression Systems BV is acquired by Howden and renamed to Howden Thomassen Compressors B.V.
